Twelve People with Disabilities (PWDs) are on the threshold of becoming Unit Committee Members in their communities. Facilitators of PWDs into local politics project believe the move could herald PWDs unfettered participation at all levels of national politics.
Voice-Ghana with funding from STAR, Ghana is the overseer of the scheme, dubbed the “Democratic Governance Project.”

VOICE-GHANA, a disability interest advocacy NGO, has held a training programme, in Ho, to prepare some Persons With Disabilities (PWDs) to successfully contest the upcoming District Assembly Level Elections. 

Twelve of the participants are aspiring to be Unit Committee members, while two would like to become assembly members.

VOICE GHANA had the opportunity to receive a number of grants from STAR-Ghana and its partners since 2011 and ever since our relationship had developed into a partnership par excellence. I can say with certainty that STAR-Ghana is a rare grantor because it did everything possible to train and build capacities for its grantees so that they can perform successfully and creditably. Our sustainability grant support for instance, can attest to this. The grant was meant to support VOICE GHANA to put the necessary administrative systems and operational strategies in place, and to build VOICE GHANA into an independent and robust Civil Society Organization.

Besides, other technical supports we received through a number of Service Providers from STAR Ghana, enabled us to develop the following administration and operational tools for use:

Voice of the People with Disability Ghana (Voice-Ghana), a Ho-based disability rights advocacy NGO, has resolved to assume the capability of a leading disability rights advocacy think-tank in Ghana in the coming years.

The gorge between the promises, policy statements on one hand and the situation on the ground is perhaps the most explicit indicator of the state’s attitude to the interest of the disabled population.

Mrs Dora Humado, the Ho Municipal Director of Education, has said it was important teachers strained to discover the special talents of their pupils.

A selected number of People With Disabilities (PWDs) from the Agortime-Ziope and Adaklu districts of the Volta Region, have been taken through modalities for contesting the forth-coming Unit Committee Elections.

The Special Needs Classes (Unit) of the Anglican School, Ho, on Monday called on the Municipal Assembly, the Municipal Directorate of Education and private enterprises to help it out of its distressed situation.

A proto-type advocacy and awareness project to bring People with Disabilities (PWDs) into the local and national political fray is underway.

VOICE GHANA in collaboration with Friends of VOICE, Denmark have designed this exemplary building that will provide the highest standard of facilities for persons with disabilities in Ghana.
